For centuries the name of the island has changed several times. When the legendary historian Kyzikoan Dionenes was talking about the Propontis (Marmara Sea) islands, he named the Avsa island "Panagia" because of the Monastery of Virgin Mary found on the island. From the records of Gedeon who made historical inspections about the islands of the Marmara Sea, it is known by a document written by Patriarch dated 1892 the name of the island was known as "Aousia". As the Republic of Turkey was found the official name of the island was changed into "Turkeli". Today the island's historical name is adjusted to the Turkish language and is finally called"Avsa" The first records about the first settlers of the island was found in the books of the geographer Strabon and historian Pilinus. The island was once used as an exile for Christian priests and was totally deserted in the middle ages. The Hotel Beyaz Saray Bay's former name meant Plane Tree District - Sacred Fountain and has played a major role in the relatively unknown history of the island. The lightning which crashed the biggest Plane Tree ever existing on the island, and devastated it by fire, was unable to prevent it's grand trunk to witness the centuries like a monument as a holy spring developed between it's roots. It's grand trunk lays dead on the ground as a monument but it's roots climb up to the sky like flags, as if hundreds of monumental Plane Trees were living there... The oldest human settlement on the island was found in the Plane Tree district - Sacred Fountain, the bay, which is now occupied by the Hotel Beyaz Saray.
